Horticultural Lighting
At Luximprint, we are well-known for our work in additive manufacturing of custom optical components. Over time, we have been awarded an interesting variety of lens development for custom horticultural solutions. Horticultural Lighting and 3D-printed optics are confirmed to be a very powerful combination and may lead us to different fields of application, while eliminating some of the bottlenecks in today’s traditional lens manufacture.
Custom Optics for Horticulture Lighting
Horticultural lighting is all about optimizing light for plant growth—think LEDs tailored to specific wavelengths that boost photosynthesis or influence plant morphology. Traditionally, optics for these systems (such as lenses and reflectors) are made through injection molding or glass fabrication, which can be costly and rigid in design.
This is where 3D printing comes in, and Luximprint stands out. At Luximprint, we specialize in 3D printing custom optics using a UV-curable resin process, adding material to create precise light-directing components. Small batches of complex designs can be prototyped and fabricated as fast as in a few days and tweak them for specific plants or setups without breaking the bank.
For horticultural applications, this means optics can be tailored to focus light exactly where it’s needed—say, narrowing the beam for vertical farms or diffusing it for broader greenhouse coverage. Our Printoptical Technology can also integrate features like wavelength filtering directly into the optic, potentially enhancing efficiency over generic solutions. The Printoptical process supports rapid iteration which allows for rapid ‘trial-and-error’ with various potential optical solutions and sorting out the best-fitting one. Custom optics can now be rapidly tested and implemented without the need for waiting months for tooling.
LUX Standard vs. LUX Crystalline Solutions
3D printed optics straight from the printer (direct “CAD-to-Optic” approach) might not yet match the durability or scale of traditional manufacturing for massive commercial setups, though our latest LUX Crystalline series are engineered to mitigate this. Still, for research-driven, rapid performance testing, or validation of design simulations, our LUX Standard solutions are a game-changer in terms of speed, cost-efficiency and flexibilty, for use in end-applications we would always recommend our superior LUX Crystalline materials.
